Hospital pens

Hospital pens are used on farms to individually manage compromised pigs.

Pig producers and their staff work hard to ensure their pigs receive appropriate care. A pig’s well-being could become less than optimal, or a pig may become sick or injured at any time in its life. Responsible care of pigs require appropriate, timely decisions about the treatment, culling, transporting and euthanising of compromised animals.

It is important that compromised pigs are identified early and treated appropriately to improve their welfare, reduce their suffering and increase their chance of recovery. Moving the compromised pig to a hospital pen to ensure it receives individual care and attention. Veterinarians play an important role in management of compromised pigs.
